How do we unearth histories, whether familial, cultural, geopolitical? The five films in Acts of Recovery offer generous observational insights through personal stories that excavate family archives around migration; extract knowledge from local plants with a Oaxaca women’s collective; follow a Palestinian glass blower turning sand into beautiful objects; navigate daily life as artists in Gaza while subjected to genocide; and the destruction of the Indus Delta in Pakistan and how those on the river are saving sacred shrines.

In Santa María Tlahuitoltepec, Oaxaca, the women’s organization Poj Kaa maintains a community herbarium. Foraging for plants is a way to share knowledge with grandmothers, midwives, healers, and shamans. In Teotitlán del Valle the Ruiz family makes their own journey in search of colours, which they find inside plants and insects that are used to dye the wool with which they weave rugs. Both practices involve exploring the territory, recognizing it, naming it, and relating to everything in it. -Canyon Cinema

Elena Pardo is an artist and a filmmaker. In her work she combines elements of analogue cinema, animation, archival research, performance, and installation. Co-founder of Laboratorio Experimental de Cine (2013-2025), artist run film lab dedicated to sharing knowledge, programming and producing experimental and expanded cinema. Since 2007, she has collaborated with community based film teaching projects in Oaxaca. [↗]
