This program confronts the violent realities of colonialism, genocide, and ongoing struggles over land, history, and representation. From staged images used to justify the genocide and dispossession of the Modoc people in Northern California, to the lived experience of a Palestinian family enduring occupation and genocide, and the ecological devastation caused by invasive Common Reed and plastic sheeting on the traditional lands of the Massachusett, Pawtucket, and Naumkeag peoples, these films expose how settler colonial powers claim and control territory by controlling how stories are told. Spanning Cree territory, Puerto Rico’s occupied shores, and contested urban spaces, these works challenge dominant narratives of power and belonging. Through intimate moments, historical reckoning, and acts of defiance, the artists demand we confront who owns the past—and who will shape the future. Bold and unflinching, this program invites urgent reflection on sovereignty, justice, and the fight to reclaim what colonialism seeks to erase.

Soup Over Bethlehem

On a rooftop in Bethlehem, a Palestinian family’s meal—centred around the traditional dish mloukhieh—becomes a battleground where food, politics, and identity collide. Through mixed languages and global passports, the film exposes life under occupation, challenges narrow national stereotypes, and shows heritage as both refuge and resistance.

Larissa Sansour is a Palestinian visual artist. She was born in East Jerusalem and studied fine arts in London, New York and Copenhagen. Central to her work is the dialectics between myth, documentary and historical narrative. She often uses science fiction to address social and political issues. Working mainly with film, Sansour also produces installations, photos and sculptures. In her recent work, Sansour has been exploring the role of nostalgia, memory and inherited trauma for personal and national identity. Sansour’s work is shown in film festivals and museums worldwide. In 2019, she represented Denmark at the 58th Venice Biennial. In 2020, she was the shared recipient of the prestigious Jarman Award (UK). She has shown her work at Tate Modern, MoMA and Centre Pompidou. Recent solo exhibitions include Amos Rex in Helsinki, Gothenburg Konsthall in Sweden, Whitworth Gallery in Manchester, KINDL in Berlin, Copenhagen Contemporary in Denmark, Gifu Museum of Contemporary Art in Japan and EMST in Athens.
