DIFFUSION’s closing program tunnels into images themselves, permeating their surfaces and fraying their pixelated edges. Out of a deceptively simple question about belonging flows a layered and subtle resilience. Urban alienation, white supremacy and settler colonialism are confronted here, obliquely, in the form of a sly riddle where images and bodies come together in force. Belonging to the mountains and streams; to the harnessed technological discovery of the protest record, the sample, the remix; dancing in a circle of collective grief; a slingshot landing a stone right in the eye of the settler; a song of Africa; a code breathed aloud, Recypher is about home and the forces that conspire to turn it to a blur or a memory. These five works step into that blur and reclaim its power.

Stereograph explores remix as a participatory event employing techniques of audio sampling and video collage, a synthesis of digital archiving, research and reinterpretation. Referenced here are excerpts such as an interview with Buchi Emecheta, documentary footage from Kitty Phetla and Darcus Howe speaking on the colonial suppression of Reggae music, appearing as fragmented and rhythmic, familiar and non-linear.

Timothy Yanick Hunter (b. 1990 Toronto, Ontario, Canada) uses self-led research and methodologies of recording and sampling to explore the experiential and aesthetic dimensions of the Black diaspora. References culled from a range of sources suggest shifting proximities, novel interactions between material and provenance. Historical photographs from museum archives meet ephemera from obscure corners of the Internet, overlaid with shards of music and spoken recordings. The resulting works are living mélanges, invested in alternative modes of making and thinking about memory, temporality, and the unknowable facets of existence. [↗]
