The end. Is the end. And the beginning. Again. The seven films in our closing program hover above, in and around death with reflections on state violence, imperialism and environmental catastrophe amidst the current genocide in Palestine, among other sites of struggle. We will gather, we will mourn, and we will remember. This program is dedicated to Tomonari Nishikawa (1969-2025).

35mm negative film stock was buried under leaves near the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. The abstract flurry of activity on the surface of the filmstrip translates the energies of the radioactive site. Disordered marks and traces, representing the imprint of time between sunset and sunrise on the night of June 24th, 2014, blend into the green and blue tones of the light-exposed emulsion. -Kortfilm

Born in Nagoya, Japan, Tomonari Nishikawa immigrated to the United States in 1999 to pursue filmmaking and earned his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. He passed away in April 2025, leaving behind a profound legacy as an artist, teacher, and friend to many. He taught in the Cinema Department at Binghamton University for many years, where he studied cinema and philosophy and started making films. Nishikawa’s films explore the idea of documenting situations/phenomena through a chosen medium and technique, often focusing on process itself. His films screened at numerous film festivals and art venues, including Edinburgh International Film Festival, Hong Kong International Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam, London Film Festival, Media City Film Festival, New York Film Festival, Singapore International Film Festival, and the Images Festival.
